Dr Edith M Szivas

I am a tourism sector specialist with over 20 year of international experience anda passion for sustainability. My expertise bridges industry and academia. My consultancy work started with a tourism marketing strategy which led to projects in tourism policy and planning, national level tourism education and human resources development and community development.

I have been fortunate to work in over 15 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East from Barbados to Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Hong Kong. Before moving into full time consultancy, I had a fascinating career in tourism at the pioneering and internationally recognised University of Surrey in the United Kingdom as Director of PhD Programme and Programme Leader for the MSc Programmes in Tourism Management, Tourism Marketing and Tourism Development. I have been working on UNWTO projects since 1998 in the area of tourism policy and planning, capacity building, the UNWTO.TedQual Programme and technical assistance and now have joined UNWTO as an Affiliate Member.

My bachelor degree was in Import/Export and as a fresh graduate I ran a consultancy company focusing on joint ventures and market research - a background that makes me see tourism as an export industry and one where quality, competitiveness and sustainability are paramount for success.

I am a firm believer in the need to balance profitability with the interest of the environment, society and culture, development and environmental conservation through the development and use of appropriate tools and policies that are in line with the principles of ‘Green Tourism’.

Szilvia Bartalos

I am a young professional with a true passion for travel and sustainability. I have always been involved in travel and tourism from one end or the other: I have studied Tourism Management for my undergraduate degree then I worked overseas on a conservation project in Central America. There I gained first-hand knowledge and exposure to the key issues and challenges surrounding tourism, conservation, environmental issues, globalization and development. This and other international travel experiences  further solidified my career interests and wanting to learn more, I have signed up for a part-time MSc in Sustainable Development with specialism in Environmental Management and focus on the Tourism Industry.

Before arriving to the UAE I have spent 8 years working and studying in the UK. I have over 7 years of work experience in events organisation, administration and communications having held a diverse range of roles in the corporate, charity and public sector.

My role at SeaStar Co involves a variety of tasks from managing the organisation's websites, to organising events, conducting researches, writing articles, developing tools for industry change and working with industry partners to communicate the 'green tourism' message.
I have a passion for travel and the environment and enjoy exploring new places and experiencing unfamiliar cultures and beautiful scenery. I have been lucky enough to have visited many exotic countries such Belize, Mexico and Burma and to have seen for myself the good and bad impacts of tourism.
